the guy behind the blog..

I am a college student currently studying a BTEC National Diploma at Level 3 in Art & 3D Design. When I chose my GCSE's i hadn't a clue what I wanted to be. I just took the ones I liked the look of. This consisted of Maths, English, Science, ICT, Geography, Resistant Materials and German, that's including the compulsory subjects. I passed them all, and gained a healthy range of grades of qualification.

First of all, i'm not an artist.. But I do like to experiment with all the different media's and materials I can when I am designing. I'm a sucker for a new pack of pencils and even find pleasure from a pristine shaped rubber, I could say i'm quite a perfectionist but when it comes down to designing, I am not afraid to get stuck in and learn from mistakes.

When i started my college course we had a rule.. We had to draw in pen. We were taught to hate the rubber, and told that in design there are no mistakes, within reason..

Architecture

For a recent college project, I designed a set of crockery that could be used in the commercial industry or even sold for people to use at home. The brief told me to pick an Architect and then use elements of the Architects style to design a crockery set that reflects it.

First I researched different Architects..

This was a very interesting part for me as one of my main interests in the design world is Architecture. I love the different styles and shapes that modern Architects use and then I also like paying close attention to the mixing of era's in buildings.

A few Architects..

Richard Meier

Daniel Libeskind - Denver Art Museum

Frank Gehry - Disney Concert Hall

I researched a few Architects and built up a database of my own consisting of building I like and then other I didn't like as much but still had interesting styles.

I chose Richard Meier.. He creates modern buildings with a very clean and simple aesthetic feel, but still manages to make them functional and modernist.

So i took the buildings and information and created my Crockery Set..

Computer Generated Using Google SketchUp..
If you analyse the Richard Meier Image I have posted above the front of the building looks as though it is a separate panel that has been 'attached' the the main structure. His building are mainly white and have a simple collection of shapes, almost as if the only shapes he knows are Square, Circle and Triangle..

I created a set using the same principle he does, 'accommodating only what it need to accommodate.' I read this among one of his articles.

Comments would be appreciated!
